Sustainable shrimps

MSCShrimps are fished from the sea bed. Big trawlers drag heavy nets over the sea bed, to find shrimp and up to 70% “bycatch” in their nets. In you know that diesel is the largest chunk in their cost structure, it is hard to understand fisheries do not work harder to avoid wasting energy on “bycatch and discards”: all other fish and shellfish, that is dumped dead over board. With the Waddenvereniging team, Hidde succesfully lobbied on the Dutch government to include MSC criteria in their permitting system, to change the way shrimps are fished in the vulnerable wetlands.
